BB Week 6 - Color Pastels
This week in our sketchbooks we introduced rubber stamps and ink pads. Each child was given a plate with 2 rubber stamps and their own ink pad. The ink pads were black, red, orange, red and blue. The rubber stamps were nature based; birds, butterflies, flowers, grasses, ants, etc. After about 5 minutes, we switched ink and stamps with our neighbor. We did this to practice sharing, coordination and organization and also so that didn't mix ink colors.
It was a bit of challenge for a few of the kids to switch, mainly because they wanted to switch with a specific person, rather than their neighbor. After a few minutes of careful explanation of the reasons for switching with our neighbor, every child had a successful switch. Rubber stamps were a hit.
Our main project of the day was introducing chalk pastels and the concept of warm and cool colors. I had made a color gradation of warm (red, orange, yellow) colors and cool (purple, blue, green) colors on separate pieces of paper. We decided an easy way to remember warm colors was to think of fire and think of water for cool colors. We then went around the table to see who was wearing warm or cool colored clothes. The kids seemed to grasp warm and cool very quickly.
I handed out stars carved from matte board and gave the kids either cool or warm colored pastels depending on the color of their clothes. We practiced drawing with the pastel and then using our fingers to rub the color into the matte board and did some color mixing. The stars also had holes punched around the edges and after finishing with pastels, each child was given yarn to string thru the star. This was a great chance to practice eye and hand coordination. The stars were then used to hang on the wall for the holiday party.
